Indianapolis, Indiana – The Indianapolis Public Library is thrilled to announce it has surpassed 3 million digital checkouts on the Libby app for the year 2024, a milestone that underscores the community’s embrace of digital reading. Libby, the library reading app, enables library cardholders to access a vast collection of e-books, audiobooks, and digital magazines for free with a Library card on devices including laptops, smartphones, tablets, and certain e-readers.

“To put this number into context, in 2021 we reached 2 million checkouts for the first time, and we’re thrilled to support such active use of our growing digital collections,” said Deb Lambert, chief collection management officer at The Indianapolis Public Library. “The growth in digital checkouts demonstrates how our community values the convenience and accessibility of digital reading. We’re proud to provide this resource to all community members with free Library cards.”

The award-winning Libby app is designed to provide library users free and easy access to digital books, audiobooks, and popular magazines such as Consumer Reports, The New Yorker, and Vogue. With Libby and an Indianapolis Public Library card, readers of all ages can find something they’ll enjoy. The app offers features like offline access, customizable reading settings, and options for those with reading differences such as dyslexia, making it inclusive for all readers.

In addition to Libby, The Indianapolis Public Library offers free streaming services such as Kanopy, which provides access to a wide selection of videos and movies, and Lote4Kids, featuring books for ages 3–8 in over 70 world languages.

“The Indianapolis Public Library offers free and open access to resources to create a more vibrant community with greater opportunity and participation,” said Gregory A. Hill, CEO of The Indianapolis Public Library. “While many of our resources are available to everyone without a Library card, such as programs and reading materials at a branch, this digital checkout milestone highlights the additional benefits of having a Library card. It’s a key to unlocking an even wider world of learning, entertainment, and discovery.”
