On May 7, 2022, all Indianapolis Public Library branches will participate in Free Comic Book Day. This annual, nationwide event, conducted in cooperation with comic book industry publishers and retailers, invites anyone to stop by a participating comic book shop, bookstore, or Library to take home and keep a free comic book. The Library’s local partner is Downtown Comics.
Andrew Davis, a public services librarian with IndyPL, helped The Library get involved with Free Comic Book Day. He hosted Free Comic Book Day at the Beech Grove Branch before the Branch merged with the IndyPL system in 2016, and since then the program has expanded to all 24 IndyPL locations.
“The comics industry has pulled together for Free Comic Book Day events since 2002, and I’m glad the Library can be a part of it,” said Davis. “I look at it as a way for us to promote our graphic novel collections and foster patron connections in a fun and unique way while providing in-demand titles for both children and adults.”
No Library card is required to pick up a free comic book, and IndyPL staff will be on hand to help guests make their selection. Supply is limited, and availability is while supplies last.
